What To Expect After Your LASIK Surgery

If you've decided to undergo LASIK surgery to have your vision corrected, congratulations. Soon, you'll be seeing clearly without the worry of glasses or contacts. While this procedure has become quite popular and is pretty straightforward, you probably have some questions about what to expect as you heal and recover. This article should give you a better idea of what to expect in the days following your surgery.

When the surgery is complete…

When the surgery is complete, your eyes will still be numb from the drops used prior to the procedure. You vision will still be blurry, but it should be more clear than before the procedure. Many people describe their vision immediately after the procedure like looking through a foggy mirror. You'll be sent home with instructions for applying antibiotic eye drops and wearing protective goggles.

When you return home…

You'll want to lay back and take a nap or listen to some music for a few hours. Your eyes will start to get a little itchy at this point, and it will be most comfortable to keep them closed. However, you should not feel any pain. Make sure you adhere to your eye doctor's instructions and put on your protective goggles if you do plan on going to sleep.

Within a few hours, the itching should subside to a minimal level, and when you open your eyes, you should notice that your vision seems to be getting clearer and clearer. You'll be amazed how quickly it progresses. Something across the room that you can barely see one hour will look almost entirely clear a few hours later. All you need to make sure of during this stage, again, is that you're wearing your goggles whenever you sleep and putting in those eye drops on the schedule advised by your eye doctor.

The next day…

When you open your eyes the day after your surgery, prepare to be amazed. Your vision should be almost completely clear by this point. Many people are comfortable driving themselves to their checkup appointments the day after LASIK. (And you will have a checkup with your surgeon on this day.) You should have no discomfort at this point, though you might see some halos when you look at bright lights and your eyes might start to get a little tired if you look at bright screens for more than a few minutes.

The days that follow…

Your vision will continue to improve a little bit more over the days that follow. The glowing of lights should lessen. Keep applying your eye drops as recommended. After about a week, you should be allowed to sleep without the protective goggles. Expect to have a few more follow-up appointments with your surgeon in the weeks after your surgery, just to ensure you're healing properly.
